Community members react to unemployment benefits expiring

MONROE, La. – Unemployment benefits for millions of Americans officially ran out Saturday night after President Trump didn’t sign the $900 billion COVID-19 relief bill.

According to the Century Foundation, more than 12 million laid-off workers were set to receive their final unemployment payments of $300 this weekend.

We took to the streets to find out how people in Northeast Louisiana are dealing with the stop of that financial support.

“I don’t think 600 dollars is going to help,” Tracy Crawford said. “Most people pay more than 600 dollars in rent. So, they can’t even pay a month’s rent with 600. They could pay three months’ rent with 2,000. So, I’m behind him 100 percent.”

“I just think it’s a travesty what they are doing on Capitol Hill,” Michal Jones said. “I think they should consider the everyday man is out here is struggling, working for these corporations and not being able to push forward and get their stuff together and provide relief to the people in a much needed time.”
