Man dies in Monroe Police custody, OPSO investigating

OUACHITA PARISH, La. – The Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s Office is investigating a man’s death after he died in Monroe Police custody.

According to the Monroe Police Department, on April 3, 2021, they came in contact with a person acting erratically at the intersection of Standifer and Alabama Avenue in Monroe, La. They say shortly after contacting the individual, he was taken into custody without incident.

MPD says the man became combative while they were transporting him. They say he had a medical emergency. Police say life-saving efforts were made, but the individual passed away. The cause of death is unknown.

MPD says because the man passed away, they immediately asked the sheriff’s office to investigate the death. The investigation is ongoing and the city of Monroe and MPD intends to cooperate fully with OPSO during their investigation.

Neither the City nor MPD will comment further on this matter while the investigation is pending.
