Bobcats Get First Win of the Season

MONROE, La. – This week the Bobcats traveled to Monroe, Louisiana in their first road contest of the season versus the Warhawks of the University of Louisiana-Monroe.

The Bobcats entered the game 0-2 in the season after back to back home losses to SMU and UTSA.

ULM entered the game 0-1 after losing 37-7 in their first game against Army.

Quarterback Tyler Vitt got his second start of the season after Brady McBride missed the UTSA game due to COVID-19 protocol and has yet to be cleared.

Texas State started the game with an impressive 85-yard touchdown drive capped off by a 4 yard run by Calvin Hill.

ULM and Texas State traded touchdowns and the Bobcats led 14-7 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Bobcats added another touchdown through the air as well as one on the ground from Vitt. They got another three points on a 40-yard field goal from Seth Keller.

The Warhawks added a touchdown of their own and the Bobcats took a 31-14 lead into the half.

The second half was dominated by the defense of both teams.

ULM held to three points and Texas State’s only score came on a pick-six from Jarron Morris that was returned for 100 yards with 53 seconds remaining in the game.

Vitt finished 14-21 for 256 yards and two touchdowns through the air and added 82 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

Jeremiah Haydel added two more touchdowns to his season total of four (three receiving and one kick return) on 152 yards receiving, including a 75-yard reception in the second quarter.

The Bobcat defense had a much better performance than in last week’s UTSA game, holding ULM to just 67 yards on the ground on 26 attempts. However, the Warhawks had some success through the air, passing for 377 yards.

Brendon Luper, Gjemar Daniels and Gavin Graham led the Bobcat defense with eight tackles each.

Next Saturday the Bobcats travel to Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts to take on Boston College at 5 p.m.
