Monroe, LA – According to the statement, his name is Abe Pierce III and he was the first elected African American mayor of Monroe.
The city of Monroe released the following on his passing:
Mayor Friday Ellis and the City of Monroe join the community in mourning the passing of Mayor Abe Pierce, III. As the first elected African American mayor of Monroe, Mayor Pierce was an innovator. His distinguished career included decades of public service as an elected official and as an educator.
Mayor Ellis says, “elected officials strive to leave their communities better than when they found it and Mayor Pierce did just that. You can see evidence of his service throughout our city and parish. His decades of service were invaluable and there’s no doubt he inspired hundreds, if not thousands of people throughout his lifetime.”
