MONROE, La. – Former Monroe Mayor Jamie Mayo has a new job.
Mayo was hired as the Washington Consultant for the city of Bastrop.
“Well first of all I’m excited. This is home,” Mayo said.
Mayo launched M5 Consulting Group, LLC after losing his mayoral re-election bid in July. Some of his duties in his new role will include promoting Bastrop, and recruiting federal and state resources.
He said it’s an honor and privilege to come back and serve in his hometown.
“I mentioned on election night that I was looking forward to the next chapter in my life. This is the next chapter of my life,” Mayo said.
Mayor Henry Cotton proposed bringing Mayo on board to the city council after they lost the person that previously filled the position. The council voted unanimously to approve the hire.
Cotton said this is not an addition to the budget and Mayo will get paid the same amount as the previous consultant at $30,000 a year.
“When I brought it to the city council, then Councilman Howard Lock who’s been on the city council for quite some time, his response was that’s a no brainer,” Cotton said.
Mayo believes his 20 plus years of experience as a mayor and city councilman will serve as a huge asset for Bastrop.
“I know that Mayor Cotton has some priorities that we will be working on so there will be a number of things that I’ll be able to assist with. I won’t be the normal consultant where I’m only working one or two things, just wherever Mayor Cotton directs me that’s where I’ll be going,” Mayo said. “We’ve had a lot successes here, and there are successes here now. I’m just here to build on those successes and help in whatever area I possibly can.”
