MONROE, LA- On January 17, when Ouachita Parish Sheriff deputies were traveling on Interstate 20, they found a suspicious gold Chrysler Town and Country van as it was crossing the white fog line. They stopped the 37-year-old Demerikes Coffey and noticed something unusual.

When he was asked to get out of the van, he was quite nervous, but he granted deputies consent to search the van for anything illegal.

Reportedly, Coffey had 3 ecstasy tablets in his pocket and 2 plastic bags with 1984 ecstasy tablets, along with a Glock 45 caliber handgun inside the vehicle.

Coffey took ownership of the handgun and narcotics, saying he didn’t know the ecstasy tablets and handgun was in the vehicle.

He was placed under arrest and transported to the Ouachita Correctional Center where he was charged with Possession with Intent to Distribute a Controlled Dangerous Substance, Improper Lane Use, and Illegal Carrying Weapon in the Presence of Narcotics.
