MONROE, La. -The Department of Transportation and Development will continue to monitor roadway and bridge conditions in Region 8 throughout the weekend. Erin Buchanan with the Department of Transportation and Development says that precautions for that anticipated blast of winter weather heading our way have already begun.

A handful of certain bridges, roadways, and corridors have been closed, and certain ones have already reopened.

Buchanan says that the DOTD has a snow and ice plan already in place for each region in the state.

However, each plan is unique, and each is adjusted or alternated depending on the potential impending weather. Here in Region 8, scouts and crew members have been out patrolling certain areas and roadways since last night to determine if more roadways need to be closed. Buchanan says they have not yet begun salting roads and bridges. They are waiting for the winter weather to get closer to our area to anticipate which areas in the region will need it most.

“We have not yet at this time began dispensing salt. That’s something we will start implementing a little closer to when were anticipate some of that wintry weather to move into the area. While a road closure may be a temporary inconvenience is all in the name of safety. It absolutely is,” said Buchanan.

They are also careful about how much salt is used and want to avoid wasting any resources.
