MONROE, La. – Entergy Louisiana said due to people quarantining at home, bills are rising earlier than usual this year but with some simple steps, people can lower them.
Keeping the thermostat at 78 degrees can help to save money because every degree below that raises costs by three percent. They also recommend doing laundry during the coolest parts of the day such as early morning and late evening. This way, the heat from the washer and dryer won’t heat up the whole house, making your AC work even harder.
“All of those factors combined makes your home more energy-efficient, and it conserves electricity. And that has an effect on reducing your electricity cost and reducing your electricity bill,” customer service manager Roderick Worthy.
They also said using a fan is a great alternative to air conditioning because it uses very little electricity while keeping you cool. They also said to reduce the amount of sunlight entering your home.
Closing your blinds, shades, and curtains will keep the sunlight out and the cool air in. Also, sealing any holes and cracks around doors can block the heat and save the AC. Worthy said these simple steps add up.
“It’ll have the opposite effect if you don’t have good stripping, good weatherization inside your home, you’ll have to re-cool the same space over and over during that same hour. And of course, that’ll drive up your electricity costs, and drive up your electricity bill,” he said.
