MONROE, La. – The Monroe chapter of the NAACP called for the community to come together for a peaceful protest at the Monroe Civic Center.
NAACP leaders said it’s time to focus on keeping the momentum going on issues that they’re seeing not just in the city but across the nation.
Several people attended the event bringing attention to police brutality, the alleged assault of Timothy Williams, the Black Lives Matter Movement, and the deaths of two prominent civil rights leaders and icons, Rev. C.T. Vivian and Congressman John Lewis.
NAACP president Ambrose Douzart said he wants people to know that Monroe has a role to play in overcoming injustice.
“We want people to understand that there are injustices everywhere, and we want the people to know also that law enforcement officers who are hired to protect them don’t take matters into their own hands. They’re to enforce the law, not break the law. So we want to ensure the citizens of Monroe that the NAACP is willing to do our part to take the lead and helping our people know to know better and do better.”
